Oral Health Index for Preschool Children and School Children by Use of a Computer Program for the Incremental Dental Care System

Abstract


Objective: To survey the oral health index of preschool and school-aged children by use of a computer program in consid-eration of such factors as number of natural teeth, caries status, periodontal status, the other oral status and systemic con-ditions and oral care habits.

Methods: Eighty-two preschool and school-aged children voluntarily participated in this survey with parental consent. Oral health index was calculated automatically by computer program; average and standard deviation were used to estimate vary-ing grades of oral health for each age group.

Results: The average oral health index for preschool children was revealed as 92.7 to 100.0 points for an A grade, 86.8 to 92.6 points for a B grade, 80.9 to 86.7 points for a C grade, 75.1 to 80.8 points for a D grade, and under 75.0 points for an E grade. The average oral health index for school children was estimated as £¾96.7 points for an A grade, 90.5 to 96.6 points for a B grade 84.4 to 90.4 points for a C grade, 78.3 to 84.3 points for a D grade, and £¼78.2 points for an E grade. A normal distribution graph was observed according to the grade of oral health measured in subjects, in both study groups.

Conclusion: It is recommended that a new grade system be utilized to assess oral health index, taking into consideration the weighting of oral health factors in the estimation of individual oral health.
